Embedding DSH Web inside a VS Code sidebar sounds convenient, but the resident sidebar gobble up most of the precious horizontal space the moment it opens, leaving the chat area squeezed into a narrow strip. dsh-client-sidebar-overlay was built for exactly this scenario: it collapses the entire sidebar out of the layout and, on demand, slides it in as a floating overlay that sits on top of the conversation without consuming any width. Once closed, the chat area reclaims the full viewport.

Interaction is simple. A whale icon next to the Session log label toggles the overlay open and closed; on the new-chat page, a floating whale button in the top-right corner serves the same role. A left/right switch at the bottom of the panel lets you choose which side the overlay slides from. Under the hood the plugin also adapts position-fixed child panels, replaces native select dropdowns with in-page equivalents, and clamps any menu, listbox, tooltip, or dialog that would otherwise fly off-screen, so everything inside the overlay stays visually consistent with the rest of the product.

The plugin is a good fit if you run DSH inside a VS Code side panel or a similarly narrow embed via extensions like deepseek-harness-vsc-extension or dsh-vscode. If your workflow lives in a full-width desktop browser, the native always-visible sidebar layout is usually the better choice and this overlay will not add meaningful value.
